Lower-Division Clubs Take Four Of Six

The third round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup commenced on Tuesday.

At New Britain, Connecticut:

Geoff Bloes scored the winning goal in overtime (105') as the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) knocked off the New England Revolution 2-1.

At Wilmington, North Carolina:

Kenny Bundy scored the only goal of the match (37') as the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL-2) defeated the visiting Chicago Fire 1-0.

At Boyds, Maryland:

Christian Gomez (74') and Ange N'Silu (90'+3) provided the scoring as DC United eliminated the tournament's last PDL club, the Ocean City Barons 2-0.

At Charleston, South Carolina:

Randi Patterson doubled (9', 45') and Tsuyoshi Yoshitake added another (90') as the Charleston Battery (USL-1) had their way at home with Chivas USA 3-1.

At Blaine, Minnesota:

With the score deadlocked at 2-2 after regulation time, and with each club tallying once during overtime, Claudio Lopez, Josh Wolff, Abe Thompson, and Herculez Gomez each converted his penalty kick to win the shootout 4-2 for the Kansas City Wizards, on the road over the USL-1 Minnesota Thunder to advance to the quarterfinal round.

At Rochester, New York:

After 120 minutes of play failed to resolve a 1-1 stalemate, the Rochester Rhinos (USL-1), with successful conversions from Darren Kenton, Mauricio Salles, Andrew Gregor, Kenney Bertz, and Ryan Heins, took the penalty-kick shootout 5-3 over the visiting Columbus Crew.
