North Korea Clinches First World Cup Berth Since '66

At Riyadh, Saudi Arabia:

In Group Two play from the Asian zone, North Korea held hosts Saudi Arabia to a 0-0 deadlock to lock up a berth in next year's FIFA World Cup finals. It will be the first time since 1966 that the North Koreans qualified for the World Cup finals, and the first time ever that both Koreas will take part in the tournament in the same year.

Besides the two Koreas, Japan and Australia automatically qualified for the 2010 FIFA World Cup out of Asia, while the two third-placed teams, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, will take part in a two-match playoff (beginning September 5 in Bahrain) for the right to play New Zealand (winners from Oceania) for a berth in next year's finals.
