Christian Gomez scored the only goal (77') in DC United's 1-0 road win over the New York Red Bulls in the opening game of the two clubs' Eastern Conference two-game, total goals, semifinal series. DC needs only a draw next Sunday at home to win this series and advance to the Eastern Conference finals.
At Denver:
Abe Thompson scored the game winner (55') in FC Dallas' 2-1 road win against the Colorado Rapids in game one of the two clubs' two-game, total-goals, Western Conference semifinal series. A win or tie next Saturday at home would send Dallas into the Western Conference finals.
