UEFA Champions League Playoff Round: Astana, BATE, Lazio, Red Devils, Lions Take Series Openers

Five games were played on Tuesday as the playoff round for UEFA Champions League group-stage berths commenced.

At Astana, Kazakhstan:

Bauyrzhan Dzholchiev scored the only goal of the match in the 14th minute as FC Astana found themselves 90 minutes away from being the first Kazakh club to reach the Champions League's group stage following their series-opening 1-0 home win over APOEL FC.

At Barysaw, Belarus:

Mikhail Gordeichuk scored the only goal of the match in the 75th minute as FC BATE Borisov defeated visiting  ten-man Partizan Belgrade 1-0 in the opening game of their two-match series.

At Rome:

Keita Balde Diao scored the only goal of Lazio's 1-0 series-opening home victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the 77th minute.

At Manchester, England:

Memphis Depay scored twice (13', 43') as Manchester United overcame an early deficit and defeated visiting Club Brugge 3-1 in their series opener.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Teofilo Gutierrez (12') and Islam Slimani (82') delivered the goals as Sporting CP took the opening match of their series with CSKA Moscow 2-1.  Seydou Doumbia kept the visiting Horses alive with his tally in the 40th minute.
