MLS: Sounders Spoil Opening Of SKC's Title Defense; Easy Wins For Crew, Caps, Dynamo; Hoops Hold Off Impact; RSL Knock Off Galaxy On Road; Stoppage-Time Equalizer Salvages Home Draw For Timbers

Major League Soccer's 19th regular season commenced on Saturday with seven games.

At Seattle:

Chad Barrett scored the only goal of the match in second-half stoppage time (90'+4) as the Seattle Sounders spoiled the opening of Sporting Kansas City's MLS Cup title defense with a 1-0 home victory.

At Washington:

Federico Higuain scored twice (PK-27', 90') as the Columbus Crew dominated home-standing DC United 3-0.

At Vancouver, British Columbia:

Kenny Miller scored twice (PK-34', 77') as the Vancouver Whitecaps, in Carl Robinson's debut as their new head coach, dominated the visiting New York Red Bulls 4-1.

At Houston:

Will Bruin scored twice (2', 13') in the first quarter-hour as the Houston Dynamo demolished the visiting New England Revolution 4-0.

At Frisco, Texas:

Mauro Diaz, on a free kick in the 47th minute, scored what proved to be the game-winning goal as FC Dallas held off the visiting Montreal Impact 3-2 in Oscar Pareja's successful debut as the Hoops' new head coach.

At Carson, California:

Joao Plata scored the only goal of the match in the 80th minute as Real Salt Lake knocked off the Los Angeles Galaxy 1-0 on the road.  RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando saved the Galaxy's Robbie Keane's game-tying penalty kick attempt in second-half stoppage time to preserve the victory.

At Portland, Oregon:

Gaston Fernandez delivered a game-tying goal deep into second-half stoppage time (90'+4) as the Portland Timbers battled back to gain a 1-1 home draw with the Philadelphia Union to stretch their unbeaten streak in regular-season home games to sixteen.  Jack McInerney scored for the guests in the 64th minute.

NOTE:  Replacement game officials worked all of the Saturday MLS games.  The Professional Referee Organization has been unable to reach a labor agreement with the referees and thus Major League Soccer used replacement officials on Saturday, as well as Sunday's Chicago Fire-Chivas USA match from Carson, California.
