Europa League Round of 16: Reds, Yellow Sub, Yellow Canaries, Dortmund Take Series Openers

The Europa League's Round of 16 opened on Thursday with eight games.

At Lviv, Ukraine:

In a match played in Lviv due to war-like conditions in the eastern part of Ukraine, Oleksandr Kucher scored the game-winning goal in the 24th minute as Shakhtar Donetsk held off visiting RSC Anderlecht 3-1 in the opening contest of their two-game series.

At Basel, Switzerland:

Sevilla held hosts FC Basel to a series-opening 0-0 stalemate.

At Dortmund, Germany:

Marco Reus scored twice (61', 70') as Borussia Dortmund dominated visiting Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 in their series opener.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

Mehmet Topal scored the only goal of Fenerbahce's 1-0 series-opening home win over SC Braga in the 82nd minute.

At Villarreal, Spain:

Cedric Bakambu scored twice (4', 56') as Villarreal blanked visiting Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in the opening match of their two-game series.

At Bilbao, Spain:

Raul Garcia scored the only goal in the 20th minute as Athletic Bilbao defeated visiting Valencia 1-0 in the opening game of an all-Spanish series.

At Liverpool, England:

Daniel Sturridge (PK-20') and Roberto Firmino (73') each scored once as Liverpool blanked visiting Manchester United 2-0 in game one of their two-contest series.


At Prague, Czech Republic:

Marco Parolo's equalizer at 38 minutes lifted Lazio to a series-opening 1-1 road draw with Sparta Prauge.  Martin Frydek scored for the hosts in the 13th minute.
