Walter Bahr, Who Played On US Team That Knocked Off England In 1950 World Cup, Son Of Two NFL Kickers, R.I.P.

Walter Bahr, the last remaining surviving member of the United States national team that upset England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup, passed away on Monday at Boalsburg, Pennsylvania at age 91 of complications related to a broken hip.

It was at that World Cup match at Belo Horizonte, Brazil that Mr. Bahr, who was a defender on that squad,  made a pass to Joe Gaetjens who scored scored what remains as one of the greatest goals in US soccer history as the Americans knocked off England 1-0.

Walter, who played on the US men's national team from 1948-57, was the father of three sons who played in the original version of the North American Soccer League with two of them, Chris and Matt, going on to long, successful careers as National Football League placekickers.
