Carli Lloyd delivered an early first-half hat trick (3', 5', 16'; the first hat trick in title game history) as the United States , who scored four times in the opening half, dominated Japan 5-2 on Sunday and won their third FIFA Women's World Cup championship, their first in 16 years.

The Americans avenged their penalty-kick shootout defeat at the hands of the Japanese at the final four years ago in Germany.

It was the highest scoring Women's World Cup title game ever.
