TAHITI CAPTURES OFC NATIONS CUP CROWN AND BERTH IN 2013 CONFEDERATIONS CUP

At Honiara, Solomon Islands:


Steevy Chong Hue scored the only goal of the match in the 11th minute on Sunday as Tahiti became the first country other than Australia (who moved to the Asian Confederation in 2006) and New Zealand to win the OFC Nations Cup final, 1-0 over New Caledonia.  The Tahitians will take part in next year's FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil.


In the third-place playoff that took place earlier in the day, Chris Wood's first-half natural hat trick (11', 25', 30') lifted New Zealand to a 4-3 win over the Solomon Islands.


The four teams that made it to the OFC Nations Cup semifinals advance to the third round of Oceania regional qualifying for a berth in the two-match playoff with the fourth-place team from the the final qualifying round from CONCACAF for a berth in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
