At Lima, Peru:
Patricio Toranzo scored twice (76', 80') as Club Atletico Huracan demolished Alianza Lima 4-0 on the road in the opening contest of their two-game series. The winner of this series will join Cruzeiro (Brazil), Mineros de Guyana (Venezuela), and Club Universitario (Bolivia) in Group Three.
At Morelia, Mexico:
David Depetris scored in the 36th minute, enabling Morelia to salvage a series-opening 1-1 home draw with The Strongest. Pablo Escobar scored in the ninth minute for the Bolivian club. The winner of this two-game series will play alongside Ecuador's Club Sport Emelec, Brazil's Internacional, and the University of Chile in Group Four.
