SPAIN BEATS NETHERLANDS IN GRUELING OVERTIME DUEL TO CAPTURE FIRST WORLD CUP TITLE

At Johannesburg:

Andres Iniesta scored the match late in the second overtime period (116', that's him lifting the World Cup trophy after the game) as Spain captured their first-ever World Cup championship, defeating the Netherlands 1-0 on Sunday at Soccer City Stadium.  Spain became the first team to win the title despite losing their opening match, the first European team to win the title outside Europe, and the first new champions since France in 1998.  As for the Dutch, they have now lost three World Cup title games without ever winning the top prize, having lost in 1974 and 1978, this despite going unbeaten in qualifying as well as unbeaten and untied in the tournament itself.
