CONCACAF Gold Cup: Mexico, El Salvador Dominate Opponents

At Chicago:


Group A play in the CONCACAF Gold Cup concluded with two games on Sunday.


In the opener, Rodolfo Zelaya scored twice (11', 70') as El Salvador demolished Cuba 6-1 to keep their knockout stage hopes alive.


In the nightcap, Andres Guardado scored twice (19', 25') as Mexico used a first-half scoring blitzkrieg in dominating Costa Rica 4-1.  Despite the loss, the Ticos will join Mexico in the quarterfinal round.


FINAL GROUP A STANDINGS:


1. x-Mexico (GP: 3; GD: +13; PTS: 9)
2. x-Costa Rica (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 4)
3. El Salvador (GP: 3; GD: 0: PTS: 4)
4. o-Cuba (GP: 3; GD: -15; PTS: 0)


x-Clinched berths in the quarterfinal round.
0-Eliminated from tournamnet


NOTE:  El Salvador can still advance to the knockout stage should Grenada defeat or draw Guatemala or if Guatemala wins by one goal or two goals if the total goals scored are 10 or less, or if Jamaica defeat Honduras by seven or more goals. Costa Rica, who finished level on points with El Salvador, drew with the Salvadorians and therefore had the same goal differential (o), advanced on the fourth tiebreaker, total goal differential (+2 to 0).
