END OF AN ERA: RIVER PLATE RELEGATED

At Buenos Aires:

After dropping Wednesday night's opening match 2-0 on the road against second-division club Belgrano, River Plate were held to a 1-1 home draw in game two of their promotion/relegation playoff series on Sunday (thus losing the two-game series 3-1 on aggregate) and were relegated from the Argentinian top flight for the first time in their 110 year history.  Guillermo Farre's equalizer at 62 minutes of the second contest was good enough to send the Cordoba-based club to the Premira Division for the first time since 2007.
