Copa America: Chile, Uruguay, Peru Advance To Quarterfinals; El Tri Eliminated

Tuesday marked the conclusion of Group C play in the Copa America, played in Argentina.


At Mendoza:


Andre Carrillo's late own goal (90'+2) carried Chile to a 1-0 win over Peru, enabling the Chileans to win the Group C title.  Both teams will play in the quarterfinal round.


At La Plata:


Alvaro Pereira scored the only goal of the match at 14 minutes as Uruguay defeated Mexico 1-0 to reach the quarterfinals and eliminated El Tri (who already won the CONCACAF Gold Cup title and a berth in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup) from the tournament.


FINAL GROUP C STANDINGS:


1. Chile (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 7)
2. Uruguay (GP: 3; GD: +1; PTS: 5)
3. Peru (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 4)
4. Mexico (GP: 3; GD: -3; PTS: 0)


Chile, Uruguay, and Peru advanced to the quarterfinal round while Mexico were eliminated.
