Copa America: Peru and Uruguay Advance To Semifinals

The quarterfinal round of the Copa America commenced with two games on Saturday played in Argentina.

At Cordoba:

Carlos Lobaton (101') and Juan Manuel Vargas (111') provided the overtime scoring as Peru knocked off Colombia 2-0 to reach the semifinal round for the first time since 1997.

At Santa Fe:

Diego Perez scored at 5 minutes to give Uruguay an early lead, only to see Gonzalo Higuan equalize for Argentina at 17 minutes.  With the score deadlocked at 1-1 through regulation time and 30 scoreless overtime minutes, Diego Forlan, Luis Suarez, Andres Scotti, Walter Gargano, and Martin Caceres all converted their spot kicks (while the Argentinians' Carlos Tevez suffered the only miss) to enable the Uruguayans to win the penalty-kick shootout 5-4 and advance to the semifinals.
