US Open Cup: Rapids Defeat Wizards In Play-In Game

At Kansas City, Missouri:

With goals from Wells Thompson (24', 80'), the Colorado Rapids defeated the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 on the road Tuesday night in the opening game in a series of playoff contests to determine the final two Major League Soccer berths in this year's Lamar Hunt US Open Cup.  Nine teams from MLS are playing to see which two will join six other MLS clubs in the competition proper.

Six MLS clubs (Chicago, Chivas USA, Columbus, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle) have automatically qualified outright for the US Open Cup tournament, as have nine clubs from USSF Division 2  (Austin Aztex, Carolina RailHawks, Crystal Palace Baltimore, Miami FC, NSC Minnesota Stars, Portland Timbers, Rochester Rhinos, AC St. Louis, and Tampa Bay Rowdies), five from USL-2 (Charleston Battery, Charlotte Eagles, Harrisburg City Islanders, Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Real Maryland Monarchs, and Richmond Kickers), with eight teams from the Premier Development League, and two from each of the four regions of the US Adult Soccer Association.
