FIFA Women's World Cup: Team USA, Australia, Cameroon, Switzerland Advance To Knockout Stage

Four games were played on Tuesday as FIFA Women's World Cup group-stage play continued in Canada.

GROUP C:

At Winnipeg, Manitoba:

Yuki Ogimi scored the only goal of the match in the fifth minute as Japan, who already clinched a berth in the Round of 16, defeated Ecuador 1-0 and won the Group C title while ending the South American country's tournament in the process.

At Edmonton, Alberta:

Madeleine Ngono Mani scored the winning goal in the 62nd minute as Cameroon knocked off Switzerland 2-1 to finish second in Group C.  Both teams advanced to the knockout stage with the Swiss, despite the defeat, assuring themselves of finishing with one of the four best third-place group records.

Final Group C Standings:

1. Japan (GP: 3; GD: +3; PTS: 9)
2. Cameroon (GP: 3; GD: +6; PTS: 6)
3. Switzerland (GP: 3; GD: +7; PTS: 3)
4. Ecuador (GP: 3; GD: -16; PTS: 0)

Japan, Cameroon, and Switzerland advanced to the knockout stage.



GROUP D:

At Vancouver, British Columbia:

Abby Wambach scored the only goal of the match in the 45th minute as the United States locked up the Group D crown and a knockout-stage berth with a 1-0 victory over Nigeria.

At Edmonton, Alberta:

Australia assured themselves passage into the knockout stage with a 1-1 draw against Sweden.  Lisa De Vanna scored for the Aussies in the fifth minute while Sofia Jakobsson equalized for the the Swedes in the 15th minute as the Scandinavian country still has a shot at advancing as one of the four best third-place finishers.

Final Group D Standings:

1. United States (GP: 3; GD: +3; PTS: 7)
2. Australia (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 4)
3. Sweden (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 3)
4. Nigeria (GP: 3; GD: -3; PTS: 1)

The United States and Australia advanced to the knockout stage.  Sweden can still advanced as one of the four third-place teams with the best records.
