Lamar Hunt US Open Cup: Timbers Oust Seven-Man Sounders; MLS Clubs Sweep Contests Against Lower-Division Clubs

Nine games were played on Tuesday as the fourth round of Lamar Hunt US Open Cup action commenced.

It is in this round that all 17 US-based Major League Soccer clubs enter the tournament.

At Chester, Pennsylvania:

After 120 scoreless minutes, Maurice Edu, Vincent Nogueira, and Cristian Maidana converted their spot kicks as the Philadelphia Union won the penalty kick 3-1 over the visiting Rochester Rhinos of the USL and advanced to the fifth round of the tournament.

At Harrison, New Jersey:

Lloyd Sam (7'), Ronald Zubar (15'), and Sean Davis (70') each produced a goal as the New York Red Bulls dominated the visiting Atlanta Silverbacks of the NASL 3-0.

At Kansas City, Kansas:

Graham Zusi scored the only goal of the match in the 70th minute as Sporting Kansas City defeated visiting Saint Louis FC of the USL 1-0.

At Bridgeview, Illinois:

Quincy Amerikwa scored the only goal of the match in the 116th minute as the Chicago Fire took a 1-0 home overtime decision over Louisville City from the USL.

At Fort Worth, Texas:

David Texeira (21', 51') and Michael Barrios (34', 36') each scored twice as FC Dallas dominated the USL's Oklahoma City Energy 4-1.

At Commerce City, Colorado:

Dillon Serna scored twice (65', 90') as the Colorado Rapids dominated the visiting Colorado Springs Switchbacks (USL) 4-1.

At Sandy, Utah:

Joao Plata (63') and Javier Morales (71') each scored a goal as Real Salt Lake came from behind to defeat Seattle Sounders 2 2-1 at home.

At Tukwila, Washington:

In a bizarre contest---the only one in the fourth round which pitted two MLS clubs against each other, Rodney Wallace scored the winning goal in the 100th minute as the Portland Timbers dethroned the defending champions Seattle Sounders after their 3-1 overtime victory on the road as the Sounders---due to three ejections and one injury---were reduced to seven men.

At San Jose, California:

Chris Wondolowski scored twice in the second half (74', 79') as the San Jose Earthquakes erased a two-goal deficit to draw even with the visiting Sacramento Republic 2-2, then after 30 scoreless overtime minutes, won the penalty-kick shootout 6-5 to oust the USL club.
