Champs Detroned

Group stage play in the Copa Libertadores continued Wednesday.

Group One:

At Recife, Brazil:

Goals from Moacir Costa da Silva (59') and Vandinho (74') powered Sport Recife to a 2-1 home win over Colo-Colo. The win by the Brazilian club locked up a Round of 16 berth and also eliminated defending champions LDU Quito from contention for a knockout stage berth out of Group One.

Group Four:

Wednesday marked the conlusion of play in Group Four.

At Montevideo, Uruguay:

Pablo Gaglianone scored the game-winning goal in second-half stoppage time (90'+4) as Defensor Sporting claimed a knockout stage berth with a 4-3 win over Independiente Medellin. This, after the visitors' Diego Cabrera euqualized earlier in stoppage time (90'+1). The loss eliminated the visiting Colombian club from the tournament. A draw would have been good enough to place the visitors in second place and the Round of 16.

At Sao Paolo, Brazil:

Sao Paolo, which already won the group, defeated visiting---and eliminated---America de Cali 2-1. Dagoberto scored both of the hosts goals (58', 67').

2. Defensor Sporting (GP: 6; GD: 0; PTS: 8)

Group Five:

Action in Group Five concluded on Wednesday.

At Sucre, Bolivia:

Estudiantes clinched a spot in the knockout stage by holding hosts Universitario de Sucre to a 0-0 deadlock.

At Belo Horizonte, Brazil:

Already Round-of-16-bound Cruzeiro eliminated visiting Deportivo Quito by blanking the Ecuadorian club 2-0. Leo Fortunato (14') and Wagner Ferreira dos Santos (26') each tallied once for the hosts.

FINAL GROUP FIVE STANDINGS:

1. Cruzeiro (GP: 6; GD: +4; PTS: 13)
2. Estudiantes (GP: 6; GD: +5; PTS: 10)
3. Deportivo Quito (GP: 6; GD: -3; PTS: 8)
