Bayern Munich and Schalke have qualified for the group stage of next season's UEFA Champions League while Werder Bremen will take part in the playoff round for the right to go to the group stage. Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund will enter the Europa League's playoff round while Stuttgart will take part in the third qualifying round. FC Nuremberg will take part in a two-match promotion/relegation playoff with FC Augsburg, who finished third in the second division (FC Kaiserslautern and St. Pauli have won automatic promotion to the top flight), while VfL Bochum and Hertha Berlin have automatically been relegated to the 2. Bundesliga.
UPDATED ON MAY 16, 2010: FC Nuremberg maintained their top-flight status by defeating second-tier FC Augsburg 3-0 on aggregate in their two-match promotion/relegation playoff series.
