Final Standings: Netherlands

Here's a look at the final standings for this season's play in the Dutch Eredivisie:

FC Twente locked up a berth in the group stage of next season's UEFA Champions League, while Ajax will take part in the Champions League's third qualifying round.  PSV and Feyenoord will play in the Europa League's playoff round while AZ will take part in the third qualifying round.  Heracles, Ultrecht, Groningen, and Roda JC will participated in the playoffs for a spot in the Europa League's second qualifying round.  Roda JC and Ultrecht will take part in the two-match playoff final having eliminated Groningen and Heracles respectively.  Sparta Rotterdam and Willem II Tilburg were taking part in the promotion/relegation playoffs for the right to play in the  top flight next season.  Clubs from the second level of Dutch soccer (Eerste Divisie), FC Eindhoven, AGOVV Apeldoorn, Helmond Sport, FC Den Bosch, Go Ahead Eagles, SC Cambuur, FC Zwolle, and Excelsior also took part.  The winners of their respective two-match third-round series (Go Ahead Eagles vs. Willem II and Sparta Rotterdam vs. Excelsior) will play in the Eredivisie next season.  De Graafschap, by finishing first in the Eerste Divisie, won automatic promotion to the top flight.  By finishing last, RKC Waalwijk were releaged to the Eerste Divisie.

UPDATED MAY 17, 2010:  FC Ultrecht won the two-match final with Roda JC (6-1 on aggregate) to gain a berth in the second round of Europa League qualifying for next season.  Willem II Tilburg (after defeating Go Ahead Eagles 3-1 on aggregate) will remain in the Eredivisie after their promotion/relegation playoff, but Sparta have been relegated to the Ereste Divisie after losing their two-match set with fellow Rotterdam club Excelsior on away goals (1-1 on aggregate). Willem II and Excelsior will be playing in the top flight of Dutch soccer next season.
