US Open Cup

The first round proper of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup took place on Wednesday as seven of the originally-scheduled eight games were played.

At Portland, Maine:

FC Sonic Lehigh Valley (National Premier Soccer League, at the fourth level of the US soccer pyramid) knocked off homestanding GPS Portland Phoenix (United Soccer Leagues' Premier Development League, at the same level as the NPSL) 1-0 in overtime as Shastri Spencer scored the game's lone goal in the 116th minute.

At Livonia, Michigan:

After a 2-2 draw at the end of regulation, followed by 30 scoreless overtime minutes, Chicago-based RWB Adria (United States Adult Soccer Association, at the fifth---or lowest---level of the US soccer pyramid) knocked off home-standing Detroit City FC (NPSL) 3-1 in the penalty-kick shootout, thanks to successful spot kicks from Semir Mesanovic, Johnny Morris, and Judson McKinney.

At Ludlow, Massachusetts:

In a battle of Bay State clubs, the Western Mass Pioneers (USL PDL), with Will Daniels (70', 89') and Alencar, Jr.(74',80') each scoring twice in the final 20 minutes of regulation,  dominated visiting Mass Soccer Premier (USASA) 4-1.

At Whippany, New Jersey:

The New York Red Bulls (NPSL), with Scott Thomsen (18') and Kendan Anderson (35') delivering the goals,  defeated the visiting Vermont Voltage (USL PDL) 2-1.

At Highlands Ranch, Colorado:

Miami-based Red Force FC (USASA), with David Olguin scoring the winning goal in the 81st minute, knocked off the hosts Colorado Rovers (the lone United States Specialty Sports Association entry in the tournament; the USSSA is in the fifth level of soccer, like the USASA) 2-1.

At Ventura, California:

Chongo Kennedy (PK-53') and Peter Gregory (64') delivered the goals for the Ventura County Fusion (USL PDL), who  defeated visiting CD Aguiluchos (NPSL) 2-1 in an all-California and all-fourth division battle as the hosts became the first PDL club to win US Open Cup matches in four consecutive years.

At San Diego:

The San Diego Flash (NPSL) received a pass to the second round after their scheduled opponents Corinthians USA (the lone US Club Soccer entry; same level as the USASA and USSSA) forfeited their scheduled match.

At Carson, California:

PSA Elite (USASA) and the visiting Los Angeles Misioneros (USL PDL) battled to a scoreless regulation draw before each team scored a goal in overtime.  The USASA club knocked off the USL PDL club 3-2 in the penalty-kick overtime to advance to the second round.
