Europa League Playoff Round: Liverpool, Citizens, Bhoys, Juve, Feyenoord, Yellow Submarine, Stuttgart, Dortmund Take Series Openers

The opening week of the Europa League's playoff round concluded Thursday with the opening games of 35 two-game series.

At Novosibirsk, Russia:

Aleksandr Degtyaryov scored the only goal of the match (90'+2) as Sibir Novosibirsk took the opening match of their two-game series with PSV Eindhoven 1-0 at home.

At Borisov, Belarus:

Second-half goals from Edhar Alyakhnovich (56'), Renan Bardini Bressan (60'), and Alyaksandr Pawlaw (70') broke open what had been a scoreless deadlock and propelled FC BATE Borisov to a convincing series-opening 3-0 beatdown of visiting Maritimo.

At Paris:

Peguy Luyindula (3') and Guillaume Hoarau (60') enabled Paris Saint Germain to blank visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv 2-0 in game one of their two-match series.

At Leverkusen, Germany:

Michal Kadlec scored twice (1', 84') as Bayer Leverkusen overpowered visiting Tavriya Simferopol 3-0 in game one.

At Khimki, Russia:

Seydou Doumbia (13', 20') and Zoran Tosic (48', 74') each scored twice as CSKA Moscow put the hurt on Anorthosis Famagusta FC 4-0 at home in their series opener.

At Vienna, Austria:

Aston Villa and hosts Rapid Vienna played game one to a 1-1 deadlock.  The visiting Villans got the first goal of the match at 11 minutes from Barry Bannan, but the hosts salvaged the draw with Atdhe Nuhiu's goal at 33 minutes.

At Bratislava, Slovakia:

Martin Harnik scored the only goal of the match (88') as VfB Stuttgart grabbed match one on the road 1-0 over Slovan Bratislava.

At Nyiregyhaza, Hungary:

In the opening match between two teams that lost out in the Champions League's third qualifying round, Adamo Coulibaly (22') and Zsott Laczko (33') provided the scoring as Debreceni VSC blanked visiting PFC Litex Lovech 2-0.

At Nicosia, Cyprus:

Marko Devic provided the game's lone tally at 24 minutes as FK Metalist Kharkiv took game one of their two-game series with AC Omonia 1-0 on the road.

At Vaslui, Romania:

The opening contest between FC Vaslui and guest LOSC Lille Metropole wound up as a 0-0 deadlock.

At Solna, Sweden:

Levski Sofia battled hosts AIK Solna to a 0-0 game-one stalemate.

At Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine:

Manuel Arboleda scored the only goal of the match at 5 minues as Lech Poznan defeated Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk 1-0 on the road in the opening contest of the clubs' two-game series.

At Odense, Denmark:

Chris Sorensen (31') and Peter Utaka (78') provided the goalpower that carried Odense BK to a 2-1 home win in game one of their two-match series with Motherwell FC.  The Scottish club kept their hopes of advancing to the group stage alive with a stoppage-time goal from Tom Hateley (90'+4).

At Rotterdam, Netherlands:

Leroy Fer scored the lone goal of the match (78') as Feyenoord Rotterdam took game one of their two-match set with KAA Gent 1-0 at home.

At Bucharest, Romania:

Bogdan Stancu provided the only goal of the match at 71 minutes as Steaua Bucharest took game one at home 1-0 over Grasshoppers.

At Istanbul, Turkey:

After visiting FC Karpaty Lviv raced out to a 2-0 halftime lead, thanks to goals courtesy of Serhiy Kuznestov (34') and Sergei Zenjov (41'), Galatasaray, with Milas Baros scoring twice (59', 86'), came back to salvage a 2-2 home draw in game one with their guests from Ukraine.

At Split, Croatia:

Senijad Ibricic scored twice (39', 66') as Hajduk Split dominted visiting FC Unirea Urziceni 4-1 in match one of their two-game set.

At Genk, Belgium:

FC Porto vitually locked up a berth in the Europa League's group stage with a 3-0 win on the road in game one with KRC Genk.  The Dragons got goals from Falcao (PK-29'), Souza (82'), and Fernando Belluschi (90').

At Palermo, Italy:

Massimo Maccarone (PK-37'), Abel Hernandez (39'), and Javier Pastore (77') each tallied once as Palermo defeated ten-man NK Maribor 3-0 at home in game one.

At Bruges, Belgium:

Carl Hoefkens (PK-71') and Jonathan Blondel (84') provided the scoring that carried Club Bruge to a 2-1 game-one home win over Dinamo Minsk.  The Belorussian club still got what might still be a precious away goal at 6 minutes form Stanislav Dragun.

At Sofia, Bulgaria:

A scoreless stalemate was shattered in the final ten mintes as Giuseppe Aquaro (81'), Gregory Nelson (82'), and Spas Delev (90') each tallied a goal as CSKA Sofia overpowered The New Saints 3-0 in game one at home.

At Lausanne, Switzerland:

Dimitri Sychev's 65th-minute equalizer enabled Lokomotiv Moscow to gain a 1-1 road draw in game one with Lausanne-Sport.  The second-division Swiss club got a goal at 28 minutes from Youssouf Traore.

At Thessaloniki, Greece:

Vieirinha scored the lone goal of the match (19') as PAOK FC, despite ending the game with ten men, defeated visiting Fenerbahce 1-0 in the series opener for both clubs.

At Liverpool, England:

Ryan Babel scored the only goal of the match (45'+1) as Liverpool held off visiting Trabzonspor 1-0 in game one of their two-match series.

At Glasgow, Scotland:

With goals courtesy of Efrain Juarez (19') and Georgios Samaras (34'), Celtic took game one of their two-game set with FC Utrecht 2-0 at home.

At Timisoara, Romania:

Mario Balotelli scored the only goal of the match at 72 minutes as Manchester City took game one on the road, 1-0 over FC Timisoara.

At Naples, Italy:

With Ezequiel Lavezzi providing all the scoring (45'+1), Napoli topped visiting IF Elfsborg 1-0 in game one.

At Getafe, Spain:

Daniel Parejo scored the lone goal of the match at 43 minutes as Getafe defeated visiting APOEL FC in game one of their two-match set.

At Dundee, Scotland:

AEK Athens took game one on the road 1-0 over Dundee United with Rafik Djebbour scoring the game's lone goal at 11 minutes.

At Alkmaar, Netherlands:

AZ Alkmaar got their two-match series with Kazakhstan's FK Aktobe off to a flying start with a 2-0 home win in game one.  Brett Holman (20') and Pontus Wernbloom (27') provided the scoring for the Dutch club.

At Gyor, Hungary:

Ante Rukavina scored both goals (19', 28') as Dinamo Zagreb took match one 2-0 on the road at the expense of Gyori ETO FC.

At Dortmund, Germany:

Shinji Kagawa (13', 41') and Lucas Barrios (21', 29') each scored twice---with all goals coming in the first half---as Borussia Dortmund blew out visiting Qarabag FK in game one 4-0.

At Graz, Austria:

Amauri scored the winning goal in second-half stoppage time (90'+1) as Juventus defeated SK Sturm Graz 2-1 on the road in match one.

At Lisbon, Portugal:

Jan Kristiansen (43') and Ousman Jallow (52') provided the scoring that carried Brondby IF to a 2-0 road win in game one over Sporting.

At Villarreal, Spain:

Five different goal scorers----Carlos Marchena (10') Santi Cazorla (16'), Borja Valero (30'), Cani (44'), and Nilmar (75')----each scored once as Villarreal annihilated visiting FC Dnepr Mogilev 5-0 in game one of their two-match set.
