The final week of the third qualifying round for the UEFA Champions League commenced on Tuesday as two two-game series concluded.
At Tel Aviv, Israel:
Eran Zahavi (16') and Ben Sahar (31') scored for Hapoel Tel Aviv as the Israeli club overturned their 1-0 setback in Kazakhstan from last week with a 3-1 home win in game two to win their two-match set 3-2 on aggregate against FK Aktobe. The visitors' fate was sealed at 35 minutes when Khalifa Elhadj Ba's own goal completed a three-goal first half for the hosts. This marked the second straight year that Aktobe were eliminated at this stage of qualifying at the hands of an Israeli club. Maccabi Haifa went on to defeat Red Bull Salzburg and advanced to the group stage last year.
At Brussels, Belgium:
Romelu Lukaku scored twice (69', 74') as RSC Anderlecht again dominated The New Saints, this time at home by a score of 3-0 as they completed their two-match smothering of the Welsh Premiership titlists 6-1 on aggregate to reach the playoff round for a berth in the group stage.
