Europa League Round of 16: Copenhagen, Red Devils, Genk, Lyon Take Series Openers

The Europa League's Round of 16 opened on Thursday with eight games.

At Vigo, Spain:

Daniel Wass (50') and Claudio Beauvue (90') each scored once as Celta Vigo topped visiting FC Krasnodar 2-1 in the opening contest of their two-game series.  Viktor Claesson kept the Russian club alive with his road goal in the 56th minute.

At Nicosia, Cyprus:

Nicolae Stanciu scored the only goal of the match in the 29th minute as RSC Anderlecht knocked off APOEL FC 1-0 on the road in the opening contest of their two-game series.

At Gelsenkirchen, Germany:

In an all-German affair, Guido Burgstaller's 25th-minute equalizer enabled FC Schalke 04 to salvage a 1-1 series-opening home draw with Borussia Dortmund.  Jonas Hofmann scored in the 15th minute for the guests.

At Decines-Charpieu, France:

Nabil Fekir scored what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 74th minute as Lyon defeated visiting Roma in the opening contest of their series.


At Rostov-on-Don, Russia:

Aleksandr Bukharov's equalizer in the 53rd minute enabled FC Rostov to salvage a series-opening 1-1 home draw with Manchester United.  Henrikh Mkhitaryan scored for the Red Devils in the 35th minute.

At Pireaus, Greece:

Vincent Aboubakar's equalizer in the 53rd minute carried Besiktas to a series-opening 1-1 road draw with Olympiacos.  Esteban Cambiasso scored for The Legend in the 36th minute.

At Ghent, Belgium:

Mbwana Samatta scored twice (41', 72') as KRC Genk, in an all-Belgian affair, dominated KAA Gent 5-2 on the road in game one.

At Copenhagen, Denmark:

Rasmus Falk (1') and Andreas Cornelius (60') each scored once as FC Copenhagen took the opening game of their series with Ajax Amsterdam 2-1 at home.  Kasper Dolberg kept the visiting Dutch club in the series with his road goal in the 32nd minute.
