NOTES:

Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Valencia automatically qualified for the group stage of the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League while Villarreal will take part in the Champions League's playoff round.

To solve the three-way tie for fifth place, points gained in games played among Sevilla, Athletic Bilbao, and Atletico Madrid was the first tie-breaker (Sevilla 7 points, Athletic Bilbao 6, Atletico Madrid 4).  Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao will take part in the playoff round for group stage berths in the 2011-12 Europa League while Atletico , as the seventh-place team (because Copa del Rey winners Real Madrid and runners-up Barcelona have qualified for the Champions League's group stage) will take part in the third qualifying round.

Deportivo La Coruna, Hercules, and Almeria were relegated to the Segunda Division.  Real Betis and Rayo Vallecano won automatic promotion to the top flight.  With Barcelona's B club finishing third, they were ineligible for promotion.  A playoff amongst the fourth-through-seventh-placed clubs (Granada, Elche, Celta de Vigo, and Valladolid) will take place in June to determine who would gain promotion to the Primera Division.

Lille and Marseille directly qualified for the group stage of the 2011-12 UEFA Champions League with Lyon securing a berth in the Champions League's playoff round.

With French Cup (Coupe de France) winner Lille having secured a Champions League berth and runners-up PSG having locked up a berth in the Europa League's playoff round, the playoff round berth that's normally reserved for the cup winners was awarded to the fifth-placed club, in this case, Sochaux.  With Champions-League-bound Marseille having won the League Cup (Coupe de la Ligue), the berth in the Europa League's third qualifying round was awarded to sixth-placed Rennes.

AS Monaco, Lens, and Arles-Avignon were relegated to Ligue 2.  They will be replaced by Evian Thonon Gailard FC, AC Ajaccio, and Dijon FCO.

Wild Finish As Rosenborg Come Back To Gain Road Point

At Skien, Norway:


In Monday Eliteserien action, Rade Prica (33'), Mushaga Bakenga (73'), and Mikael Dorsin (87') each scored a goal as Rosenborg, who at one time trailed 2-0, came from behind to gain a 3-3 road draw with Odd Grenland.   The hosts' goals came courtesy of Simen Brenne (18'), Frode Johnsen (31'), and Magnus Myklebust (86').

Shamrock Rovers Back On Winning Track

In Monday League of Ireland Premier Division action, Karl Sheppard scored the only goal of the match at 42 minutes as Shamrock Rovers blanked visiting Bohemians 1-0.

Eamon Zayed Quadruple Dooms Galway United

At Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland:


Eamon Zayed's four-goal performance on Monday (45', 74', PK-81', 90') played a key role in Derry City's League of Ireland Premier Division 6-0 home horsewhipping of struggling Galway United.

SCOTT SINCLAIR HAT TRICK HELPS LIFT SWANS TO PREMIER LEAGUE

At London:


Scott Sinclair's hat trick (PK-21', 22', PK-80') helped carry Swansea City to a 4-2 English League Championship promotion playoff final victory over Reading at Wembley Stadium on Monday, sealing the Swans' promotion to the Barclays Premier League.  The Swans will be playing in the top flight of English soccer since 1983 and the first club from Wales to play in the Premiership since its' formation in 1992.  They will be joining already-promoted Queens Park Rangers (first time in the top flight since 1996) and Norwich City (relegated from the Premiership in 2005).

MLS: DC United Ends Timbers' Home MLS Winning Streak

Lions Wrap Up SuperLiga Season With 2-0 Home Win Over AaB (Who Bareley Survive Relegation Battle)

At Copenhagen, Denmark:

Cesar Santin (27') and Jesper Gronkjaer (45'+1) each delivered a first-half tally as FC Copenhagen closed out their Danish SuperLiga campaign with a 2-0 home win over Aalborg BK.  The Lions finished 26 points ahead of runners-up Odense BK and will enter the third qualifying round for next season's UEFA Champions League while AaB finished just one point above the drop zone (Randers FC and Esbjerg FB are dropping down to the second division for next season.

Nerazzurri Capture Coppa Italia

At Rome:

Samuel Eto'o scored twice on Sunday (26', 76') as Inter Milan held off Palermo 3-1 to win the Coppa Italia final.  It marked the seventh time that the Nerazzurri won the championship of Italy's big domestic cup competition.

POSH ERUPT FOR THREE LATE GOALS TO RETURN TO LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

At Manchester, England:

Tommy Rowe (78'), Craig Mackail-Smith (80'), and Grant McCann (85') each scored a goal during a seven-minute span in the second half on Sunday as Peterborough United defeated Huddersfield Town 3-0 to win the English League One promotion playoff final and join already promoted Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton in gaining promotion to the League Championship.

MLS: Sounders End RSL League Home Unbeaten Streak At 29; Philly and Galaxy Also Win On Five-Draw Saturday

Eight games were played in Major League Soccer on Saturday.


At Toronto:


Justin Mapp (10', 61') and Danny Mwanga (71', 88') each scored twice as the Philadelphia Union spanked Toronto FC 6-2 on the road.


At Vancouver, British Columbia:


Luke Rodgers' equalizer at 33 minutes lifted the New York Red Bulls to a 1-1 road deadlock with the Vancouver Whitecaps.  Eric Hassli's successful penalty kick at 23 minutes provided the Whitecaps' goal.  Both teams' winless streaks continued, New York's at five and Vancouver's at eleven.


At Columbus, Ohio:


Andres Mendoza scored twice (17', 52') while Emmanuel Ekpo provided the equalizer at 64 minutes enabling the Columbus Crew to salvage a 3-3 home draw with Chivas USA.  Nick LaBrocca (4'), Andrew Boyens (39'), and Jorge Flores (57') each scored once for the Goats.


At Foxborough, Massachusetts:


Miguel Lopez used his noggin in the 69th minute, deflecting in David Beckham's free kick for the only goal of the game as the Los Angeles Galaxy defeated the home standings New England Revolution 1-0.


At Bridgeview, Illinois:


The Chicago Fire salvaged a 2-2 home stalemate with the San Jose Earthquakes.  Dominic Oduro (57') and Cory Gibbs (87') provided the goal power for the Fire while the Quakes were represented on the scoreboard by Ramiro Corrales (50') and Chris Wondolowski (74').


At Houston:


In the first edition of this year's MLS Texas derby, Cameron Weaver (41') and Colin Clark (87') each scored once as the Houston Dynamo settled for a 1-1 home draw with FC Dallas.  The Hoops got goals from Andrew Jacobson (26') and Ugo Ihemelu (70').


At Commerce City, Colorado:


Ryan Smith's equalizer at 75 minutes lifted Sporting Kansas City to a 1-1 road draw with the Colorado Rapids.  Conor Casey scored for the Rapids at 13 minutes, but Caleb Folan failed on what would have been a winning penalty kick attempt at 90 minutes.


At Sandy, Utah:


Patrick Ianni (71') and Lamar Neagle (83') each scored once in the second half as the Seattle Sounders ended Real Salt Lake's 29-match MLS home unbeaten with a 2-1 road win .

Fabio Ferreira scored the only goal of the match at 35 minutes on Saturday as Botafogo defeated visiting Santos 1-0 in Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A action.

CAF CL: Wydad Casablanca Win Playoff To Enter Group Stage

At Cairo, Egypt:


In a special one-match playoff for the CAF Champions League group-stage berth forfeited by TP Mazembe because of the Congolese club's use of an ineligible player, Morocco's Wydad Casablanca, with goals from Fabrice N'Guessi (88'), Ayoub El Khaliqi (90'+4), and Mouhcine Iajour (90'+6), defeated Simba SC (Tanzania) 3-0 on Saturday.  Wydad will be in Group B alongside Al-Ahly (Egypt), MC Alger (Algeria), and Esperance ST (Tunisia).

At Overland Park, Kansas:


Chance Myers (9', 19') and C. J. Sapong (24', 88') each scored twice on Wednesday as Sporting Kansas City demolished the visiting New England Revolution 5-0.



LEO THE LION SCORES WINNING GOAL AS BARCA TOP RED DEVILS TO CAPTURE FOURTH EUROPEAN CLUB TITLE

For the second time in three years on Saturday, Barcelona defeated Manchester United in the final of the UEFA Champions League as Barca took the contest 4-1 for their fourth European club championship, tying them with Ajax Amsterdam and Bayern Munich.


Pedro Rodriguez got the scoring started for Barca in the 27th minute, but Wayne Rooney tied it up for the Red Devils in the 34th minute.  The game was deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime.


Lionel Messi, who was named man of the match, scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute, while David Villa (pictured here) added the insurance tally in the 69th minute.


Barcelona also won European club titles in 1992, 2006, and, against the Red Devils, in 2009.


Only Real Madrid (nine), AC Milan (seven), and Liverpool (five) have won more European club championships than Barca.


Barca coach Pep Guardiola, at age 40, has now won two European club crowns, as many as his Manchester United counterpart, Sir Alex Ferguson.

STEVENAGE WIN PROMOTION TO LEAGUE ONE

At Manchester, England:


John Mousinho scored the only goal of the match at 41 minutes on Saturday as Stevenage locked up their second successive promotion with a 1-0 English League Two Promotion Playoff final triumph over Torquay United.  Stevenage had concluded their first-ever season in the Football League and will be playing League One soccer next season alongside already-promoted Chesterfield, Bury, and Wycombe Wanderers.

Puerto Rico Islanders Top Tempete In OT To Win CFU Club Title; Alpha United Win Third-Place Match

At Georgetown, Guyana:


The Puerto Rico Islanders defeated Tempete FC (Haiti) 3-1 in overtime to win the final of the CFU Club Championship on Friday night.  Both finalists, as well as Alpha United (Guyana), who defeated Defence Force FC (Trinidad and Tobago) in a penalty-kick shootout at the conclusion of the earlier third-place match, which had been deadlocked at 1-1 after 120 minutes, will take part in the qualifying round for the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League.

CFU Club Championship: Tempete and Puerto Rico Islanders Win Way To Final (And Berths In CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round)

The semifinal round of the CFU (Caribbean Football Union) Club Championship took place on Wednesday with both contests taking place at Georgetown, Guyana.


In the opener, after 120 scoreless minutes, Junior Charles, Paul Valdano, Joachin Gregory, and Cadet Changler all converted their penalty kick attempts and Tempete FC (Haiti) won the shootout 4-2 over Defence Force FC (Trinidad and Tobago).


In the nightcap, with the score deadlocked at 1-1 following regulation time, Jonathan Fana (108') and David Foley (116') each scored an overtime goal as the Puerto Rico Islanders defeated Alpha United (Guyana) 3-1.


Temptete and the Islanders will play each other in the nightcap on Friday for the CFU Club Championship title.  Both clubs have qualified for the preliminary round of the 2011-12 CONCACAF Champions League.  Defence Force and Alpha United will square off in Georgetown in the opener for third place----and a spot in the Champions League's preliminary round.

Chalk Up Still Another Defeat For Floundering Djurgarden

At Stockholm, Sweden:

Lasse Lars Nilsson scored the only goal of the match at 79 minutes on Thursday as Elfsborg, now sitting second in the Allsvenskan standings, continued the miserable start to Djurgarden's season, 1-0 on the road.  DIF currently sit in the relegation zone, in 15th place, leading only Halmstad.

Wolverhampton Wanderers Classic: 1960 FA Cup Championship

Time for another Wolverhampton Wanderers classic as we journey to May 7, 1960, to Wembley Stadium in London as Wolves took on Blackburn Rovers in the 1959-60 FA Cup Final as captured on this British Pathe newsreel.  Before 98,954 fans, Norman Deeley scored twice (67', 88') as Wolves won their fourth (and most recent) FA Cup championship 3-0.

At Odense, Denmark:

Nutrilite Canadian Championship: Wait 'Til Thursday

At Toronto:


Wednesday's scheduled second match of the Nutrilite Canadian Championship, which was deadlocked 1-1 on aggregate, was abandoned due to lightning and a waterlogged pitch at BMO Field.  The Vancouver Whitecaps were leading Toronto FC 1-0 in this contest.   Now, the results have been wiped out and the game is scheduled to be replayed in its' entirety on Thursday, starting a 11:00 AM Eastern Time.  Weather and field conditions permitting.

MLS: Hoops Stretch Shutout Streak To 489 Minutes In Road Win Over Sounders; Galaxy Blank Visiting Dynamo; Rapids and Red Bulls Draw

Three games were on the Major League Soccer docket for Wednesday.


At Harrison, New Jersey:


The Colorado Rapids battled the New York Red Bulls to a 2-2 road deadlock.  Jeff Larentowicz scored both Colorado goals (27', 31') while Thierry Henry (28') and Luke Rodgers (33') each tallied once for the Red Bulls.


At Seattle:


Brek Shea scored the only goal of the match in the 18th minute as FC Dallas defeated the Seattle Sounders 1-0 on the road. With another shutout from goalkeeper (and birthday boy) Kevin Hartman, the Hoops, who have racked up five wins and two draws in their last seven contests,  have not surrendered a goal in their last 489 minutes of MLS action.


At Carson, California:


Landon Donovan's successful 46th-minute penalty kick provided all the scoring as the Los Angeles Galaxy downed the visiting Houston Dynamo 1-0.   

Copa Libertadores: Santos Take Semifinal Opener

At Sao Paulo, Brazil:


Edu Dracena scored the only goal of the match at 43 minutes on Wednesday as Santos defeated visiting Cerro Porteno 1-0 in the opening game of their two-match Copa Libertadores semifinal series.

Grasshoppers Drop Season Finale

At Bellinzona, Switzerland:


In the Swiss Super League regular-season finale for both clubs, Frank Feltscher scored both goals (20', 63') as Bellinzona blanked visiting Grasshoppers 2-0 on Wednesday.  The visitors finished in seventh place, assuring themselves of another season of top-flight soccer, while the hosts, who finished ninth, will take part in a two-game promotion/relegation playoff against Servette, who finished second in the second-division Challenge League, for the right to play in the top flight next season.

Bulls Top Austria Vienna To Finish Second

At Vienna, Austria:


Alan scored twice in the final fifteen minutes (77', 84') as Red Bull Salzburg came from behind to defeat Austria Vienna 4-2 as the Austrian Bundesliga campaign came to a close.  Both the Bulls and Austria will take part in the second round of qualifying for next season's Europa League.

Borussia Monchengladbach: Glad To Stay Up

At Bochum, Germany:


Marco Reus provided the survival assurance goal at 72 minutes on Wednesday as Borussia Monchengladbach gained a 1-1 road draw with VfL Bochum in game two of their two-game promotion-relegation playoff series, enabling the visitors to win the series 2-1 on aggregate and assure themselves of another season in the German Bundesliga.  It capped off the Great Escape for Monchengladbach as they picked up ten of a possible twelve points from their final four league games to keep their top-flight survival chances alive.  As for Bochum, who were relegated from the top flight at the end of last season, they failed to join Hertha Berlin and FC Augsburg in gaining promotion to the top flight.

AFC CL: FC Seoul, Suwon Bluewings, Zob Ahan, Al-Sadd Advance

Round of 16 action in the AFC Champions League concluded with four games played on Wednesday.

At Suwon, South Korea:

Yeom Ki-Hun (23') and Lee Sang-Ho (57') provided the scoring as Suwon Samsung Bluewings blanked Nagoya Grampus 2-0 at home to advance to the quarterfinal round.

At Seoul, South Korea:

Thanks to goals scored by Bang Seung-Hwan (38'), Dejan Damjanovic (55'), and Ko Myong-Jin (90'+2), FC Seoul dominated visiting Kashima Antlers 3-0.

Santos and Internacional Draw In Season Opener

Beginning with action from this past weekend, this blog will keep tabs on action from the top flight in Brazil, concentrating on Santos.


At Santos, Brazil:


Santos opened their latest Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A campaign with a 1-1 home draw this past Saturday against Internacional.  Keirrison's successful penalty kick at 28 minutes gave Santos a 1-0 lead before ze Roberto squared things for the visitors at 34 minutes.

Strike Ends

They still can't, for the time being, wear the shoes of their own choosing, though.

At Commerce City, Colorado:


Goalkeeper Stefan Frei made three saves as Toronto FC gained a 0-0 stalemate with the home standings Colorado Rapids.


At Frisco, Texas:


Goalkeeper Kevin Hartman made two saves as FC Dallas stretched their shutout streak to 399 minutes in their 0-0 home deadlock with Real Salt Lake.  This contest was the second in the last three Hoops home contests to be delayed by lightning, this one delayed in the 83rd minute for one hour and 52 minutes.

Rabiu Afolabi's own goal at 86 minutes (along with Thomas Reifeltshammer's tally at 48 minutes) lifted SV Ried to a 2-2 road draw in Sunday Austrian Bundesliga action with Red Bull Salzburg.  Christoph Leitgeb (45') and Alan (58') each scored once for the Bulls, who now fall three points behind front-running SK Sturm Graz with one game remaining in league play.

WOLVES STAY UP DESPITE 3-2 HOME DEFEAT TO BLACKBURN (WHO ALSO STAY UP)

At Wolverhampton, England:


Despite dropping a 3-2 decision at home Sunday to Blackburn, Wolverhampton, like their guests, maintained their English Premier League membership for next season.  The visiting Rovers dominated first-half action with goals from Jason Roberts (22'), Brett Emerton (38'), and David Hoilett (45').  Wolves, however, thanks to Jamie O'Hara (73') and Stephen Hunt (87'), managed to make it a one-goal game in the second half.  With Birmingham City (2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur, who sewed up a Europa League qualifying berth) and Blackpool (4-2 at Manchester United) having also lost, Wolves managed to finish in 17th place, one point and one place above the relegation zone.  The Carling Cup-winning Brumbies and Tangerines, along with West Ham United, will be playing in the League Championship next season.

MLS: Galaxy Grab Angelino Derby; Philly, Sounders, Quakes, Timbers All Win At Home; Dynamo and Red Bulls Draw

Six games were contested in Major League Soccer on Saturday.


At Chester, Pennsylvania:


Carlos Ruiz scored the winning goal at 73 minutes as the Philadelphia Union upended the visiting Chicago Fire 1-0.


At Houston:


Mehdi Ballouchy's equalizer at 90 minutes lifted the New York Red Bulls to a 2-2 road draw with the Houston Dynamo.  Sergio Koke scored at 82 minutes to give Houston a short-lived 2-1 advantage.


At Carson, California:


Chad Barrett scored the only goal of the match in the 26th minute as the Los Angeles Galaxy got the measure of Chivas USA 1-0 in the latest installment of the MLS Super Classico.  This was designated a Goats home game.


At Seattle:


Jeff Parke used his noggin as he netted the only goal of the match near the death (90'+3) as the Seattle Sounders continued Sporting Kansas City's road woes 1-0.


At Santa Clara, California:


Ellis McLoughlin (70') and Bobby Convey (82') provided the goals as the San Jose Earthquakes held off the visiting New England Revolution 2-1.

Alvaro Negredo scored twice on Saturday (2', 62') as Sevilla assured themselves of a fifth-place finish and a shot at Europa League play with a 3-2 road win over Espanyol in the Spanish Primera Division season finale for both clubs.  The Parakeets will finish in eighth place in the league standings.

Standard Liege Cop Belgian Cup Crown

At Brussels, Belgium:


Eliaquim Mangala (34') and Adnan Mravac (OG-61') provided the scoring of Saturday as Standard Liege blanked KVC Westerlo 2-0 to win the Belgian Cup final.  Despite losing the match, Westerlo will take part in the second round of qualifying for next season's Europa League, as Standard had locked up a berth in the UEFA Champions League's third qualifying round.

Royal Blues Annihilate Duisburg To Win German Cup Title

At Berlin:


Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scored twice on Saturday (22', 70') as Schalke 04 buried second-division club MSV Duisburg 5-0 to win the final of the DFB-Pokal tournament, enabling the Royal Blues to capture their first major piece of silverware since 2002.  As German Cup winners, Schalke will take part in the playoff round for a group-stage berth in next season's Europa League.

DONS WIN PENALTY KICK SHOOTOUT TO SECURE FOOTBALL LEAGUE MEMBERSHIP

After 120 scoreless minutes on Saturday, Danny Kedwell connected on the game-winning penalty kick as AFC Wimbledon defeated Luton Town 4-3 in the shootout to win the English Football Conference promotion playoff final and win promotion to the  Football League for the first time in their nine-year history.  The Dons will joined already-promoted Crawley Town next season in League Two.

Antlers Blow Two-Goal Lead And Settle For Road Draw

Hiroyuiki Takasaki (67') and Mazzolla (69') provided the scoring on Saturday as Urawa Red Diamonds erased a two-goal lead to salvage a 2-2 home deadlock with Kashima Antlers in a battle of two struggling J. Gary Twigg scored twice in the second half of Friday (56', 61') as League of Ireland Premier Division-leading Shamrock Rovers broke open what was a scoreless stalemate at halftime and smothered visiting (and basement-occupying) Drogheda United 3-0. 

Candystripes Held To Home Draw

At Derry (Londonderry), Northern Ireland:


Daire Doyle's equalizer at 69 minutes lifted Bray Wanderers to a 1-1 Friday League of Ireland Premier Division road draw with Derry City.  Patrick McEneley scored at 26 minutes for the host Candystripes.



Stevenage vs. Torquay United For Promotion To League One

Both semifinal series in the English League Two promotion playoffs concluded on Friday.


At Accrington, England:


Chris Beardsley scored the only goal of the match at 90 minutes as Stevenage, seeking their second successive promotion, blanked Accrington Stanley 1-0 on the road to take their two-game series 3-0 on aggregate.


At Shrewsbury, England:


A 0-0 road draw in game two with Shrewsbury United proved to be good enough for Torquay United as they  took their two-game series 2-0 on aggregate.


Torquay United will face Stevenage in the promotion playoff final at Manchester England's Old Trafford on May 28 for promotion to League One, joining already-promoted Chesterfield, Bury, and Wycombe Wanderers.

Mexican Clausura Playoff Final: Pumas and Morelia Draw In Series Opener

At Morelia, Mexico:


Joao Rojas scored his equalizer at 72 minutes on Thursday as Morelia settled for a 1-1 home draw with UNAM Pumas in the opening game of the two-game Mexican Primera Division Clausura Playoff final.  Francisco Palencia scored at 67 minutes for the visitors.  The series will conclude this coming Sunday in Mexico City.

Copa Libertadores: Penarol, Cerro Porteno Reach Semifinals

The quarterfinal round of the Copa Libertadores concluded with two games on Thursday.


At Santiago, Chile:


Fabian Estoyanoff scored the series-winning goal at 84 minutes as Penarol, despite dropping a 2-1 decision on the road in game two against Universidad Catolica, still advanced on the superior goal difference (+1 to -1) with each team having garnered three points.


At Asuncion, Paraguay:


Pedro Benitez provided the only goal of the match at 72 minutes as Cerro Porteno took game two of their two-match set 1-0 at home over Jaguares and took out the Mexican club four points to one.
