Blades Gain Road Draw In Promotion Playoff Semifinal Opener

The playoffs for promotion from the English Football League Championship to the Premiership began Friday:

At Preston:

Brian Howard's goal at 46 minutes enabled Sheffield United to gain a 1-1 road draw with Preston North End in game one of the two clubs' two-match semifinal playoff series. Sean St. Ledger socred for the Northenders at 21 minutes.

The winner of this two-match set would face the winner of the Redding-Burnley series for the right to play in the promotion final later this month at Wembley Stadium in London.

Wolverhampton and Birmingham City have already locked up automatic promotions to the English Premier League.

At the other end of the scale, Norwich City, Southampton, and Charlton Athletic were relegated to League One.
