At Montevideo, Uruguay:
Leandro Desabato scored the game's only goal at 13 minutes as Estudiantes defeated Defensor Sporting 1-0 on the road in game one of their two-match set.
At Sao Paolo, Brazil:
Palmeiras and visiting Nacional (Uruguay) played to a 1-1 draw in the opening match of their two-game series. Diego Souza put the hosts up 1-0 at 55 minutes, but Nacional's Santiago Garcia equalized at 80 minutes.
