Heerenveen Capture KNVB Cup

At Rotterdam, Netherlands:

After a 1-1 draw in regulation time, 30 minutes of overtime in which each team tallied once, SC Heerenveen defeated FC Twente 5-4 in the penalty kick shootout to win the KNVB Cup, the big Dutch national club competition on Sunday. It was Heerenveen's first ever Dutch Cup championship.

Scoring:

SC Heerenveen's one regulation-time goal came from Goran Popov at 27 minutes. Eljero Elia equalized at 55 minutes for FC Twente. In overtime, Bonaventure Kalou put Heerenveen back in front at 112 minutes, only to see Twente's Youssouf Hersi eqaulize at 118 minutes.

Heerenveen make all five of their spot kicks in the shootout (Viktor Elm, Michael Dingsdad, Michel Breuer, Bonaventure Kalou, and Gerald Sibon each converted), while Twente made four of five.

With the triumph, Heerenveen qualified for the playoff round for entry into the 2009-10 Europa League (formerly UEFA Cup).
