Goals from Rodrigo Teixeira (58') and Holger Matamoros (69') enabled Deportivo Cuenca to come from behind and defeat visiting Caracas FC 2-1 in the opening match of their two-game series.
At La Plata, Argentina:
Mauro Boselli's double (63', 70') helped lift Estudiantes to a 3-0 home domination of Libertad in the series opener for both clubs.
At Santiago, Chile:
Thanks to goals from Soares (8') and Marquinhos Parana (51'), Cruzeiro took the opening match of their two-game set with a 2-1 road win over Universidad de Chile.
