After Diego Rubio's equalizer in the 32nd minute enabled Sporting Kansas City to gain a 1-1 Wednesday US Open Cup semifinal regulation home draw with the San Jose Earthquakes, 30 scoreless overtime minutes followed.
In the penalty-kick shootout, the aforementioned Diego Rubio, Ilie Sanchez, Jimmy Medranda, Daniel Salloi, and Matt Besler converted their spot kicks as SKC won the shootout 5-4 to advance to the September 20 final, in which they will host the winner of next Tuesday's FC Cincinnati-New York Red Bulls match (to be played in Cincinnati).
