AZ Up To Second; Heerenveen In Persuit Of Champions League Berth; SC Heracles Almelo Out Of Relegation-Playoff Zone---Excelsior In

Four games were played Sunday in the Dutch Eredivisie:

At Alkmaar:

Shota Arveladze's successful 23rd-minute penalty kick lifted AZ Alkmaar to a 1-0 home win over Vitesse Arnhem. The win moved the hosts back up to second place in the Eredivisie standings, two points in back of frontrunning PSV Eindhoven.

At Tilburg:

Afonso Alves' second-half hat trick (49', 52', 69') lifted SC Heerenveen up to fifth place (and a spot in the playoffs for a UEFA Champions League qualifying berth) as the guests defeated Willem II Tilburg 3-1.

At Almelo:

Rob Friend tallied twice (20', 90') as SC Heracles Almelo moved out of the relegation-playoff zone with a 4-1 home spanking of Feyenoord Rotterdam which knocked the guests out of a Champions League playoff berth.

At Groningen:

FC Groningen, gunning for a spot in the playoffs for a UEFA Cup berth, manhandled visiting NEC Nijmegen 4-1, as four different scorers each scored once for the hosts.
