At Leverkusen, Germany:
Goals from Javier Cuellar (1'), David Lopez (71'), and Pierre Webo (73') sparked Osasuna to a 3-0 road fistbeating of Bayer Leverkusen in their series-opening match.
At Alkmaar, Netherlands:
Visiting Werder Bremen and AZ Alkmaar played game one of their two-match series to a 0-0 stalemate.
At Seville, Spain:
Goals from Frederic Kanoute (PK-19') and Aleksandr Kerzhakov (36') paced reigning UEFA Cupholders Sevilla to a 2-1 home win in their series opener with Tottenham Hotspur, whose Robbie Keane opened the scoring early in the second minute with a precious away goal.
At Barcelona:
Goals courtesy of Raul Tamudo (15'), Albert Reira (33'), and Walter Pandiani (58') enabled Espanyol to withstand a furious rally by visiting SL Benfica for a 3-2 series-opening home win. Nuno Gomes (63') and Simao (65') scored the second-half tallies for the visitors.
