Herculez and The Bombadier Lead Rapids Past DC In Debut At New Digs; Goats Spoil TFC Debut

Five games were played on Saturday as Major League Soccer launched its' 12th season:

At Commerce City, Colorado:

In their first match at Dick's Sporting Goods Park, the Colorado Rapids picked up their first-ever opening day victory, a 2-1 home triumph over DC United. The Rapids' Herculez Gomez scored the first goal at the new facility (19'), with Roberto (Bombadier) Brown adding one at 35 minutes. Luciano Emilio adverted the shutout with his 80th-minute tally.

At Columbus, Ohio:

The regular season opener for the New York Red Bulls (with captain Claudio Reyna playing his first MLS match) and Columbus Crew wound up stalemated at 0-0.

At Salt Lake City:

The season opener for FC Dallas and Real Salt Lake (with ex-DC United star Freddy Adu) wound up deadlocked at 2-2 as Carlos Ruiz is credited for scoring the equalizer for the visitors during second-half stoppage time.

At Bridgeview, Illinos:

Logan Pause's goal at 4 minutes held up as the Chicago Fire opened their regular season with a 1-0 home win over the New England Revolution.

At Carson, California:

Chivas USA ruined the debut of new expansion club Toronto FC, winning at home 2-0 . Ante Rezov (35') and Sacha Kljestan (87') provided the scoring for the Goats.
