2010 FIFA World Cup, Group C: TEAM USA DEFEATS ALGERIA TO WIN GROUP; Three Lions Win And Advance Too

Two games in Group C were played on Wednesday as the World Cup continued in South Africa.

At Pretoria:

Landon Donovan's stoppage-time goal (90'+1, pictued here by Yves Logghe) carried the United States to a 1-0 win over Algeria, enabling the Americans not only to advance to the Round of 16 but win their group for the first time since 1930.  In the snapshot below by Elise Amendola, here's Landon celebrating the game-winning goal with Team USA----and Los Angeles Galaxy teammate Edson Buddle.  Both photos are from Associated Press.

At Port Elizabeth:

Jermain Defoe scored the only goal of the match at 23 minutes (pictured here as he beats goalkeeeper Samir Handanovic) as England defeated Slovenia 1-0 to advance to the knockout stage and, combined with Team USA's win over Algeria, eliminate the former Yugoslavian republic from the tournament.
