US Open Cup: Action Commences For Real

The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament proper got under way on Tuesday.

At Harrisburg, Pennsylvania:

J. T. Noone (97') and Dominic Oppong (119') delivered the overtime goals as the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) defeated the Brooklyn Italians (USASA) 4-2.

At Richmond, Virginia:

Matthew Delicate scored the only goal of the match at 119 minutes as the Richmond Kickers (USL-2) knocked off visiting Crystal Palace Baltimore (USSF Division 2 Pro League, or D2 Pro, which is the second level of soccer in the United States) 1-0 in overtime.

At Bridgeville, Pennsylvania:

Alex Weekes (35') and Adam Gazda (42') each tallied once in the first half as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USL-2) defeated visiting Detroit United (USASA) 2-0.


At Rochester, New York:


Tino Nunez (18') and Jamie Franks (PK-28') each scored once as the Rochester Rhinos (D2 Pro) blanked the visiting Dayton Dutch Lions (PDL) 2-0.

At Cary, North Carolina:

Sallieu Bundu's goal at 23 minutes carried the Carolina Railhawks (D2 Pro) past the visiting Charlotte Eagles (USL-2) 1-0.


At South Huntington, New York:


Danny Kramer (19') and Alex Grendi (65') each scored once as the Long Island Rough Riders (PDL) blanked the visiting New York Pancyprian-Freedoms (USASA) 2-0.


At Reading, Pennsylvania:


Jyler Noviello scored the winning goal in overtime (98') as Real Maryland Monarchs (USL-2) defeated Reading United (PDL) 2-1.


At Charleston, South Carolina:


Brandon Massie (7'), Levi Coleman (12'), Zach Prince (42'), and Tommy Heinemann (68') each tallied once as the Charleston Battery (USL-2) doubled up on CASL Elite (USASA) 4-2.


At Lauderhill, Florida:


Paulo Araujo, Jr. scored four goals----all in overtime (110', 112', 113', 119')----as Miami FC (D2 Pro) overpowered the visiting Central Florida Kraze (PDL) 5-1.


At Blaine, Minnesota:


Warren Ukah scored twice (35', 45'+1) while Neil Hlavaty (PK-75') and Simone Bracalello (71') each scored once as the NSC Minnesota Stars (D2 Pro) defeated the visiting KC Athletics (USASA) 4-2.


At West Des Moines, Iowa:


Mike Ambersley scored the only goal of the match at 70 minutes as AC St. Louis (D2 Pro) defeated the homestanding Des Moines Menace (PDL) 1-0.


At Austin, Texas:


Jamie Watson doubled (25', 63') while Joey Worthen added another goal (33') as the Austin Aztex (D2 Pro) blanked the visiting DFW Tornados (PDL) 3-0.


At Dallas:


Chad Burt (2') and Aaron King (85') provided the goalpower that carried FC Tampa Bay (D2 Pro) to a 2-0 road win over Legends FC (USASA).


At Portland, Oregon:


With goals in the second half from Alex Nimo (58'), Takayuki Suzuki (87'), and James Marcelin (90'), the Portland Timbers (D2 Pro) overpowered the visiting Sonoma County Sol (USASA) 3-0.


At Bremerton, Washington:


John Fishbaugher (3', 110') and Stephen Phillips (95') provided the goals that carried the Kitsap Pumas (PDL) to a 4-2 overtime win over the Bay Area Ambassadors (USASA).


At Ventura, California:


After a 1-1 deadlock through 120 minutes, Chris Green, Paul LaMarca, Mitch Garcia, and Nick DeLeon each converted a penalty kick in the shootout as the Arizona Sahuaros defeated the Ventura County Fusion (PDL) 4-2 in the shootout to advance, becoming the only USASA club remaining in the tournament.






Eight games in the second round will take place next Tuesday.

FC Tampa Bay vs. Miami FC at Fort Lauderdale, Florida


Arizona Sahuaros vs. Austin Aztex at Austin, Texas


Portland Timbers vs. Kitsap Pumas at Bremerton, Washington


The winners will advance to the Round of 16, with eight games to be played on June 29.  This is where you start seeing Major League Soccer clubs (Chicago Fire, Chivas USA, Columbus Crew, Houston Dynamo, Los Angeles Galaxy, Seattle Sounders FC, New York Red Bulls, and DC United) in action.
