2010 FIFA World Cup, Round of 16: Black Stars Oust Team USA Again, This Time In OT Thriller

At Rustenburg, South Africa:

Asamoah Gyan scored the game-winning goal in overtime (93', that's him, above,  celebrating in this snapshot from Matt Dunham for Associated Press) as Ghana defeated the United States 2-1 Saturday to become only the third African country to reach the quarterfinal round of the World Cup (Cameroon in 1990 and Senegal in 2002).  Kevin-Prince Boateng , thanks to another early miscue by the Americans, put the Black Stars ahead 1-0 in the 5th minute.  But Landon Donovan's successful penalty kick in the 62nd minute squared things for Team USA as they largely outplayed their opponents in the second half.  Ghana took control of the match in overtime as Asamoah Gyan scored the game winner.  The snapshot, below, from Kevork Djansezian for Getty Images of Clint Dempsey, captures the frustrations for Team USA.  The Black Stars will face Uruguay in Johannesburg at Soccer City Stadium next Friday in the quarterfinal round.
