2010 FIFA World Cup, Round of 16: After 120 Scoreless Minutes, Paraguay Wins PK Shootout With Japan To Advance

At Pretoria:



After 120 minutes in which the match was stalemated at 0-0, Paraguay converted all five penalty kick attempts (Edgar Barreto, Lucas Barrios, Cristian Riveros, Nelson Haedo Valdez [that's him pictured here], and Oscar Cardozo, who hit the shootout and game winner) in the first shootout of this year's World Cup, to defeat Japan 5-3 in the shootout to advance to their first-ever appearance in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
