US Open Cup: DCU, Sounders Advance To Quarterfinals

The Round of 16 in the US Open Cup concluded with two games on Wednesday.

At Fairfax, Virginia:

DC United, thanks to goals courtesy of Jaime Moreno (47') and Santino Quaranta (56'), defeated the Richmond Kickers (USL-2) 2-0.

At Portland, Oregon:

After a 1-1 deadlock through 120 minutes, Seattle Sounders FC won the penalty kick shootout 4-3 on the road over the Portland Timbers (D2 Pro).  Nate Jaqua put the Sounders ahead at 13 minutes, but Bright Dike equalized for the Timbers at 38 minutes.  After 30 scoreless overtime minutes, Nathan Sturgis, Steve Zakuani, Fredy Montero, and, with the game winner, Zach Scott converted their penalty kicks in the shootout that send Seattle into the quarterfinal round.


For the quarterfinal round, three games will be played next Tuesday:


Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) vs. DC United at Boyds, Maryland


Charleston Battery (USL-2) at Columbus Crew


Chivas USA at Houston Dynamo


Next Wednesday:


Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders FC at Tukwila, Washington
