2010 FIFA World Cup, Group C: Wuz We Robbed? Team USA Denied Win After Erasing Two-Goal Deficit; Goose Eggs For England and Algeria

All four teams in Group C played their second group-stage contests Friday in the World Cup in South Africa.

At Johannesburg:

Maurice Edu appeared to have scored what would have been the potential game-winning goal in the 86th minute, only to have it called off by referee Koman Koulibaly, in what may have been, at best, a questionable call.  The United States had erased a two-goal halftime deficit and, in the end, wound up settling for a 2-2 draw with Slovenia.  Valter Birsa (13') and Zlatan Ljubijankic (42') had scored in the first half to give the Alpine country a 2-0 halftime lead, but Landon Donovan (48') and Michael Bradley (82', that's him [right], celebrating with teammate Herculez Gomez) each tallied once to salvage a point for Team USA and keep the Americans' chances of advancing to the knockout stage very much alive.  With a win on Wednesday in Pretoria against Algeria, the US would lock up a berth in the Round of 16.

At Cape Town:

England and Algeria battled to a seemingly dreary 0-0 stalemate.  A stifling defense kept the Desert Foxes' chances of advancing alive.  In this snapshot for Associated Press by Julie Jacobson, two key members of the Three Lions, Frank Lampard and Wayne Rooney react accordingly after missing a scoring chance.  This isn't exactly the kind of start England had in mind---two draws---going into the tournament.

 GROUP C STANDINGS:

1. Slovenia (GP: 2; GD: +1; PTS 4)
2. United States (GP: 2; GD: 0; PTS: 2)
3. England (GP: 2; GD: 0: PTS: 2)
4. Algeria (GP: 2; GD: -1; PTS; 1)

The United States hold the second tie-breaker, leading England on total goals, 3-1.
