2010 FIFA World Cup, Group D: Late Penalty Kick Sends Ghana Past 10-Man Serbia; Germans Make Mince Meat Out Of Shorthanded Socceroos

Two games were played on Sunday as Group D play commenced in the World Cup in South Africa.

At Pretoria:

Asamoah Gyan (that him celebrating, as captured by Luca Bruno for Associated Press) successfully converted his penalty kick in the 84th minute carried Ghana to a 1-0 win over Serbia in the opening group-stage contest for both teams.  This marked the first win for a team from Africa in the first World Cup played on the African continent.

At Durban:

Goals from Lukas Podolski (8'), Miroslav Klose (26'), Thomas Muller (67'), and Cacau (70', that's him celebrating, as captured in the Getty Images photo by Joem Pollex) helped Germany deliver a 4-0 frontier-styled fist beating to Australia, who played with ten men after Tim Cahill was red-carded out of the game for his late tackle on Bastian Schweinsteiger.
