2010 FIFA World Cup, Group H: Spain Tops Chile And Both Teams Advance As Group Stage Play Concludes

The conclusion of Group H play on Friday closed the curtain on group stage play in this year's World Cup.

At Pretoria:



David Villa (24', that's him [right], celebrating with teammate Xavi Hernandez) and Andres Iniesta (37') provided the first-half spark as Spain held off Chile 2-1 to win Group H.  Despite the loss, the first suffered by a South American country in this year's tournament, the Chileans, along with the Spaniards, advanced to the knockout stage.

At Bloemfontein:



Honduras held Switzerland to a 0-0 deadlock that saw both teams eliminated.  Here is crestfallen Swiss player Reto Ziegler being consoled by head coach Oliver Hitzfeld.

FINAL GROUP H STANDINGS:

1. Spain (GP: 3; GD: +2; PTS: 6)
2. Chile (GP: 3; GD: +1; PTS: 6)
3. Switzerland (GP: 3; GD: 0; PTS: 4)
4. Honduras (GP: 3; GD: -3; PTS: 1)

This coming Monday in Round of 16 play, Brazil will take on Chile at Ellis Park Stadium in Johannesburg, while on Tuesday in Cape Town, it will be Spain vs. Portugal.
